Bad day at the office for Russell Knox in North Carolina

Russell Knox from Inverness had an uncharacteristic poor round of 74 to drop from joint 14th to joint 30th after two rounds of this weekend's Hooters Tour event at Rock Barn Golf & Spa at Conover, North Carolina.
Florida-based Knox, who had a 70 in the first round over the par-72, 7180yd course, slumped to a triple bogey 6 at the shot third and had further bogeys at the 11th and 16th. He did birdie the seventh, eighth and 18th, not enough to offset the mistakes.
With two or three players having to finish their second rounds on Saturday morning - including David Skinns from Lincoln, a former US college circuit player, Yohann Benson from Montreal leads the field with 67 and 68 for 135 - three shots ahead of Will Wilcox from Alabama with scores of 73 and 65.

FLORIDA FISTFUL OF DOLLARS
FOR RUNNER-UP RUSSELL KNOX

Even a final round of six-under-par 66 for a total of 15-under 201 was not enough for Russell Knox to step up from second place overnight in this week's NGA Hooters Tour Winter Series tournament at Rio Pinar Country Club, Orlando in Florida.
Knox had an eagle and six birdies in halves of 32 and 34 but bogeys at the 12th and short 17th eventually made the difference between victory and a two-shot defeat.
The former Scotland youth cap had earlier rounds of 70 and 65 and earned $7.273 as he finished second behind American Ted Potter who had rounds of 66, 68 and 65 for a 71-under-par total of 199, which earned him the $14,545 first prize.
Knox, from Inverness, but a resident of Jacksonville Beach, Florida since his four years at Jacksonville University, has won $26,452 from the eight Winter Series events in Florida. This week's prize was the biggest of his consistent run in which he has twice finished second, four times in the top five and only once out of the top 15 since last November.

Russell Knox (out in 29) jumps into Hooters Tour contention

Russell Knox leaped into contention for the five-figure dollars first prize in this week's NGA Hooters Tour with a second-round, seven-under-par 65, which included one of the best outward halves of his pro career.
The Inverness exile and former Scotland youth cap had an eagle and five birdies for that magical figure of 29 to the turn at Rio Pinar Country Club, Orlando, Florida. He spoiled it a bit with a bogey at the 13th but a birdie the next restored him to seven under par for the round.
That gives him a 36-hole tally of nine-under-par 135 as he soared from joint 16th at the start of the day to second place at the end of it, one shot behind the new leader, Ted Potter from Silver Springs, Florida. Ted has scored 66 and 68 for 134.
One shot behind Knox are Americans Ryan Gildersleeve (Clearwater, Florida) with 67 and 69 for 136 and Patrick Nagle (Pacifica, California) with a pair of 68s.
Paul Maddy (Gog Magog, Cambridge), one of two English pros in the first-round pictured dropped back with a 73 for 141. The other, Dave Thomas from Dunmow, Essex, plummeted out of the tournament, slumping from a 68 to an 82 for 150 and from a tie for fifth place to sharing 82nd -- which put him seven shots on the wrong side of the cut at 143 or better.

SCOT ON HOOTERS TOUR

Knox's two-under-par 70 only good enough for share of 16th

Inverness exile Russell Knox shot a two-under-par 70 but finds himself "only" in a share of 16th place at the end of the first round in this week's NGA Hooters Tour Winter Series event at Rio Pinar Country Club, Orlando in Florida.
Based at Jacksonville Beach, Florida since his four years at Jacksonville University, the former Scotland youth international was going really well when he turned in three-under-par 33 with birdies at the third, fifth and ninth but he lost a bit of momentum with a bogey 6 at the long 10th.
He got the shot back with birdie at the 12th but then dropped a second shot at the 15th on his way to one-over-par 37 for the inward journey.
Ted Potter (Silver Springs, Florida) is setting the pace with a six-under-par 66. He leads the field of 115 players by one shot.
Two players from England are among the group of six players sharing fifth place on 68. They are Dave Thomas from Dunmow, Essex and Paul Maddy from the Gog Magog club, Cambridge.

Knox needs something special in second round,

and Gunn is six shots off the pace in Arizona

Inverness exile Russell Knox, a winner on the Hooters Tour three weeks ago, consistently makes the cuts on this highly-competitive US mini-tour but the Scot looks destined to fail in this week's event at The Members Club, Woodcreek in Elgin, South Carolina.
Russell has posted a first-round, one-over-par 73 to be seven shots behind the six players sharing the lead on 66. He is well down the field.
The cut mark can be as low as three under par on the Hooters Tour so Knox needs an exceptional second round over a course just over the 7,000yd mark.
Meanwhile, fellow Highlander Jimmy Gunn from Dornoch is struggling with a 74 on another very competitive US circuit, the Gateway Tour.
Gunn is six shots behind pacemaker Zack Miller in the Tour Championship at Legacy Golf Club, Arizona. The course is 7,199yd long.

Third-round 80 puts Scott

Jamieson out of rain-hit

Hooters Open money

Glasgow's Scott Jamieson finished well out of the money after a disastrous third round of 80 for a share of 57th place in the rain-shortened Hooters Tour Open at Rock Barn Golf & Spa, Conover in North Carolina today.
Jamieson, after earlier rounds of 76 and 73 to beat the cut, had a double bogey 6 at the 11th, and double bogey 5s at the short 15th and short 17th in halves of 36 and 44. He had birdies at the first, fifth and eighth.
In his first round, the Scot, pictured, had a triple bogey 7 at the fifth and a double bogey 5 at the short 17th.
Florida-based Russell Knox, the Scot who is one of the leading money-winners on the Hooters Tour, did not play in this event - the last for four weeks - as he is flying back to Scotland for an eight-day break in his home-town of Inverness.
American Blaine Peffley, who played on the US college circuit as a student at Maryland University, won the $33,566 first prize by three strokes with scores of 72, 69 and 68 for seven-under-par 209.

Runner-up was Scott Stallings with 74, 67 and 71 for 212, a shot ahead of a third American, Justin Smith, with scores of 74, 67 and 71.

Scott Jamieson has nightmare 80

in third round of Hooters Open

Russell Knox is not playing in this weekend's Hooters Tour Open over 72 holes at Rock Barn Golf & Spa, Conover in North Carolina.
Russell is coming back home - if he can call Inverness home these days - for a short break from his base for the past few years at Jacksonville Beach in Florida.
That leaves Scott Jamieson, like Knox a former US college circuit player, to carry the standard for Scotland.
And he had a nightmare third round of 80 for a tally of 13-over-par 229.
The Glasgow man had three double bogeys - at the 11th, short 15th and short 17th. Birdies at the first, fifth and eighth were not enough to compensate in halves of 36 and 44.
Another former US college player David Skinns, now living in Atlanta, Georgia had rounds of 73, 75 and 75 for 223.
In the race for the $33,566 jackpot prize, three men shared the lead of 141 at the halfway point - Justin Smith from Pennsylvania with 67 and 74, Scott Stallings from Tennessee with 74 and 67, and Blaire Peffley, also from Pennsylvania with 72 and 69.

Russell Knox coming home

March 17 for eight-day break

Russell Knox from Inverness, the most successful Scottish professional golfer in the United States this year - better results than Martin Laird on the US PGA Tour and Jimmy Gunn on the Gateway Tour - is taking a holiday home to Inverness on March 17 for eight days.
"Can't wait even though the temperature for the latest NGA Hooters Tour event at the weekend was 80 degees and sunny!" said Russell in an E-mail to Scottishgolfview.com
"I feel my game is improving steadily and I can't wait to step it up a level either to the Nationwide Tour of the US PGA Tour.
"Have not really thought about coming back to play in Europe. Tough to leave a climate like this where it is this warm in early March. Love it over here."
+Russell sent the above picture from his mobile phone on Sunday at the conclusion of the latest Hooters Tour event in which he achieved another top-10 finish and pocketed over $5,000.

extra $1,800 in Florida

A last-hole birdie was worth around an extra $1,800 to Inverness exile Russell Knox in the final round of the latest NGA Hooters Tour event, the Amelia Island Plantation Classic in Florida.
Knox had rounds of 68, 71, 70 and 71 for eight-under-par total 280 over the Oak Marsh course. That earned him a shared of seventh place and a financial reward of $5,215 which would have been only $3,443 but for that 18th hole birdie, the fifth of the round, which also included four bogeys.
He birdied the first, second, 11th, 13th and 18th, and bogeyed the fifth, eighth, 12th and 16th.
Winner of the $33,566 jackpot prize was American Ted Potter with scores of 68, 69, 69 and 67 for 15 under par 273 and a two-shot victory.

Knox rallies with five birdies in a row

to stay in Hooters Tour hunt

Stephen Shellock (Orlando, Florida) took full advantage of “moving day” by bolting to the top of the leaderboard with a course record-setting round of 11-under-par 61 at the NGA Hooters Tour's Amelia Island Plantation NGA Classic presented by Valley Crest over the 6775 yard, par 72 Oak Marsh Golf Course. The round included 11 birdies, 1 eagle and 2 bogies.

Inverness-born Russell Knox starts in joint fourth place on 209, having improved from joint eighth place at the start of the third round. When the Highlander bogeyed the short fourth and then ran up a double bogey 5 at the short seventh, he looked as if he were in free-fall but then Knox strung together five successive birdies - at the eighth, ninth, 10th, 11th and 12th - to retrieve the situation.

Knox finishes with eagle for

joint 2nd and $5,915 cheque

Inverness exile Russell Knox, pictured right, boosted his earnings in the Hooters' Tour's Winter Series to $25,490 from eight events since early December with a joint second place finish today over the Stoneybrook West course at Winter Garden, Florida.
Over a 7,101yd par-72 course, the Florida-based Knox had rounds of 68, 71 and 70 for a seven-under-par total of 209. That tied him with George Bradford from Pikesville, Maryland (68-70-71) as they finished two behind the winner of the $12,904 first prize, Chris Wilson from Dublin, Ohio with scores of 68, 67 and 72 for 207.
Knox finished with an eagle 3 and that was worth an extra couple of thousand dollars to him.

Russell must have thought that third place was the best he could achieve until overnight leader Ted Potter from Silver Springs, Florida blew up with a closing round of 76 after setting the pace with scores of 65 and 69.
The Scot, who stayed on in the States after playing the US college circuit for four four years as a Jacksonville University student, earned $5,915, his highest cheque of the Winter Series.

KNOX WINS HIMSELF A FISTFUL

OF DOLLARS IN FLORIDA

Inverness exile Russell Knox won himself a fistful of dollars by finishing joint 14th in the NGA Hooters Tour's Winter Series event at Deer Island Golf Club, Tavares in Florida today.
Knox improved with every round, following up a disappointing 75 with scores of 70 and 69 for a two-under-par total of 214. He earned $1,754. A par 4 instead of a double bogey 6 at the fifth in his first round would have seen him finish joint fifth and double his take-home pay to his base at Jacksonville Beach, Florida.
Knox stayed on in Florida after four successful years on the US college golf circuit as a student at Jacksonville University.
Former European Tour player Paul Curry had rounds of 77, 68 and 71 to finished joint 26th on level par 216 for which he received $1,047. Curry has been a winner already this year on what is a highly competitive satellite tour.

Knox needs to pull his socks up

to beat the cut in Florida

Inverness exile Russell Knox was in danger of one of his rare "missed cut" appearances on the NGA Hooters Tour after a first-round, three-over-par 75 in the Winter Series event at Deer Island Country Club, Tavares in Florida.
Knox had a double bogey 6 on his card and not enough birdies to compensate as he went into the second round, knowing he needed to beat par to have the remotest chance of surviving in a highly competitive field of 129.
English-born Paul Curry, a winner on the Hooters Tour this year, was in even bigger trouble than the Scot who has lived at Jacksonville Beach, Florida since his four years at Jacksonville University.
Curry could do no better than a first-round 77.
The early leader after 36 holes was Joshua Wooding from California with 70 and 68 for 138.
Patrick Nagle from Indiana was onf 140 with scores of 69 and 71.

Elsewhere on the mini-tour scene in the United States:

Former Royal Dornoch amateur Jimmy Gunn survived the 36-hole cut in the Gateway Tour's Desert Series event at Trilogy Golf Club, Arizona with scores of 71 and 70 for a three-under-par tally of 141. Players had to total 144 or better to make the last round.
Gunn, playing in temperatures in the mid-70s, birdied the first, 13th and 15th before dropping his only shot of the day at the 16th. He is 11 shots behind the new leader, American Ben Kern, with a pair of 65s for 130. Demoted from the pole position, Kevin Stadler is in second place on 133 with scores of 63 and 70.

Knox, pictured right by Cal Carson Golf Agency, had rounds of 68, 69 and 69 to earn $2,073. He was one of the tour's leading money-winners in 2008.

Russell Knox makes top 10 in

Oklahoma despite double bogey

Russell Knox from Inverness earned $4,957 for a joint eighth finish in The Buffalo Run Classic, the latest event on the NGA Hooters Tour, at Peoria Ridge, Oklahoma on Sunday.

Knox, who has lived at Jacksonville Beach, Florida since his four years on the US college golf circuit as a student at Jacksonville University, had earlier scores of 69, 63 and 64. His final total was 20-under-par 268 but, on this satellite circuit where the standard of play is unbelievably high, the winner, Jeff Corr from Longwood, Florida shot 30 under par 258 (62-64-64-68 over a 6,960yd course to earn the top pay-out of $33,566

Scot shoots second-round 63 in Oklahoma

Opportunity Knox for
Russell in Hooters
Tour event

Inverness exile Russell Knox, now based in Jacksonville Beach, Florida, shot a nine-under-par second round of 63 to zoom into contention for a big pay-out in the Buffalo Run Casino Classic, the latest event on the NGA Hooters Tour, at Peoria Ridge Golf Club in Oklahoma.
Knox, who had a bogey-free first round of 69, went into Sunday's final two rounds in the rain-hit 72-hole tournament, in joint seventh place on 12-under-par 132.
Amazingly, his 63 included a double-bogey 6 at the second. The former Scotland youth cap, who played for four years on the American college circuit as a student at Jacksonville University, Florida, had an eagle 3 at the eighth and nine birdies, including six after the turn for an inward half of 30. He birdied the last four holes.
Knox, pictured above by Cal Carson Golf Agency (all rights reserved), is still six shots behind the leader, Jeff Corr, from Florida who scored 62 and 64 for 18-under-par 126, underlining how high the standards are on this US satellite tour. To survive the halfway cut in this tournament, players had to shoot seven-under-par 137 or better.
The Scot has earned $31,896 from nine events, having missed the cut in two of them.
His biggest cheque so far was for $11,265 in the Guatemala Open in late February.
Two other former college players, David Skinns from Lincoln and Colin Spiers from Dunblane, are lying joint 14th and tied 43rd respectively
Skinns has scored 64 and 69 for 133, Spiers a pair of 68s for 136.
